About Movie Mike

Movie Mike is a name, not a person. Or rather, it’s the only name you’re going to get. What I can tell you is that I’ve spent more years than I care to count adjacent to the machinery that makes and breaks films, close enough to watch good scripts get committee-noted into something unrecognizable, close enough to see why the third act of a film you loved felt like it was apologizing for itself. I started this site because the films that actually matter — the ones made outside the system, around the system, or in spite of it — were getting buried under the algorithmic avalanche of franchise content, and somebody needed to be loud about that.

Movie Soapbox is where I climb up and say the things the industry doesn’t want said out loud. We cover the films that the studios didn’t greenlight, the ones that got made anyway on nothing and became something, the ones with endings that trust you enough to leave you uncomfortable. If you finished a film and went straight to the internet looking for someone to tell you what just happened, you’re in the right place. If you think the best movie of any given year was made for under two million dollars by two guys and a camera in a location nobody recognized, you’re definitely in the right place. Pull up a chair. The guy sleeping in the corner won’t bother you.
